An introduction to the track

In theory, I should have been nervous, but I wasn’t. Ignorance, or naivete, can be a great buffer. So while looking over my workouts for the week, the greatest concern for me was the tempo run  on Thursday, not today’s inaugural track workout. I know the pain of running a speedy pace for three miles. Running 600 meter repeats? I had no clue how that would feel. I had no clue if the splits my coach gave me were fast. I had no clue if it was going to hurt a lot or just a little.

And so I entered my first track workout with no expectations, fully OK with whatever times showed up on my watch once I reached the 600 meter mark. To my surprise, I ran faster than the prescribed time and held within the range he gave me.

Granted, there were moments on each repeat when I felt as if I had been punched in the gut and by the fifth and sixth repeats my legs were feeling a bit like jello. But, dare I say it, the track workout was actually fun. Maybe I’m just caught up in Olympic fever.
